Features of Consumer Protection Act, 2019.

The 2019 Act has incorporated many new features which the earlier 1986 Act did not provide for


Specific features incude

  • 1. Right to be protected against hazardous goods and services

  • 2. Right to be informed about the quality, quantity, and price of goods/services.

  • 3. Right to choose from various goods/services at competitive prices.

  • 4. Right to seek redressal against unfair trade practices.

  • 5. Right to consumer education.

  • 6. Right to be heard and represented in consumer forums.

Advisory bodies established at 3 levels to promote & protect consumer rights 1. Central. 2. State. 3. District.

A regulatory body with the power to take suo moto action, conduct investigations, and impose penalties for unfair trade practices, misleading advertisements, and violations of consumer rights.

The Act brings e-commerce platforms under its purview, requiring them to ensure transparency, consumer rights, and grievance redressal.

Manufacturers, sellers, and service providers are liable for defective products or deficient services, leading to compensation claims.

Three-tier consumer courts for faster dispute resolution: District / State / National Commission

Celebrities and endorsers can also be held accountable for false advertisements.

Encourages mediation as a faster way to settle consumer disputes. Highly technical issues like medical negligence may though be difficult for reference to ADR. Voluntary organisations can also be part of ADR as envisaged in the Act.
